Our club had two winners and two bronze medallists when they hosted the Aviva English Schools Track and Field Championships at Don Valley at the weekend.
The showpiece of the two day meeting is the final afternoon with non stop action and it was here that Luke South secured his win. He won the intermediate 400 metres in 49.65 in one of the most thrilling finals of the day. He was runner up in his heat to Farren Morgan of Kent and took second place again in the semi final behind Edmond Amaning (London). But he demonstrated that championship running is about strength to run three races. He had the strength to squeeze home from Christian Byron (West Midlands) by just one hundredth of a second in 49.65.
In the senior girl's discus Tesni Ward produced her best ever throw of 44.52m to win the gold medal. Tesni also won gold in the javelin at the England Athletics (AAA) Championships together with 2 bronze medals in discus and shot, gold in the Midland Counties Championships in both shot and discus, bronze in the CAU intercounties in discus, gold in the Welsh Senior Championships in shot and discus with silver in javelin, same again in the Welsh U20 champs - she's had a brilliant year
