Jessica Ennis won the heptathlon gold in the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona today with a thrilling final run in the 800m. In day one she had won the first two events, the 100m hurdles and high jump. Under pressure in the shot put she produced a solid throw of 14.05m with her final throw. She then finished the day with a season's best performance in the 200m of 23.21 to leave the opposition in her wake.

Day 2 saw Jess start the day with a near best long jump of 6.43m, and going into the javelin she was mindful of the threat of Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska who is strong in the event and was lying in 2nd place. Having seen Dobrynska produce a personal best, Jess then produced a personal best throw herself of 46.71m to leave her 68 points ahead going into the final event, the 800m. In the 800m Jess led from the start and when Dobrynska passed Jess with 200m to go, Jess accelerated past her and won by a distance of 8m in a season's best time of 2:10:18. The final points total fot Jess was 6,823. a new championship record. Many congratulations Jess from a very proud club.
