SYCAA Cross Country League - Match 3, 27 November - Race report

When we arrived at Mount Saint Mary’s, Spinkhill, the wind was so strong that the padded wrap-arounds on the rugby posts had been blown off the posts and were tumbling across the course. We didn't attempt the gazebo. It took six people to put the League Secretary’s tiny tent up, and the wind even got under the tape we’d used to stick the course maps on the doors of the pavilion and sent them flying, not to be seen again. As usual, none of this deterred our hardy and determined athletes who turned up looking like they’d really rather be somewhere indoors. That didn’t last long though as they all got down to business and we had some more fantastic individual results and team scores for the club on this excellent course.

Kaya Walker repeated a win in the U11 Boys race for the 3rd time this season, Nathan Ramsay in 13th, Peter Sykes on his debut for the club in 15th, and Sam Cottam coming in 17th ensuring 2nd place for the team.

Francesca Shield finished 5th for the U11 girls, with May Moorwood (8th), Olivia Hogan (10th) and Erin Bartholomew (15th) bringing the team home in 3rd position. Marianna Wood-Bonelli and Catherine Kebell dug in and finished 17th and 18th very respectably in the top half of the field.

Oliver Dane unfortunately had to pull out of the U13 Boys race due to injury, but Joe Morton had a fine run finishing in 2nd place and scoring 4 points.

The U13 Girls race saw a great team performance only narrowly being beaten into 2nd place by Hallamshire. Amelia Lancaster led the team in 3rd place, Mariella De Lara 7th, Emily Simpson hard on her heels in 8th and Megan Storey completing the team in 10th place. Poppy Nolan, Sophie Kebell and Lauren Walker battled through the wind to finish 20th, 22nd and 30th respectively.

Joe Hibbert didn’t let being the lone representative for the club in the U15 Boys race put him off and had a great run finishing 4th. Well done Joe!

Ellie Curran finished 2nd for the U15 Girls, and led the team to a comfortable 1st place with Sophie Taylor (4th), Anina Atkinson (6th) and Georgia Hird (9th).

Joe Lancaster, improving all the time after a long absence, finished 2nd for the U17 Men.

Our U17 Ladies left no one in any doubt about the team results taking 4 places out of the top 5. Eve Pound led the team back finishing in 1st place, with Beth Ansell (3rd), Laura Goodwin (4th) and Calvi Thompson (5th). Susannah Curran backed up the team finishing 10th.

In the Senior Ladies race, Eleanor Alexander finished an excellent 5th on her debut for the club in this League.

The Mens race saw some exciting running with Jacob Clark and James Gray shoulder to shoulder leading the first 3 laps, until Jacob finally managed to pull ahead on the last lap to win the race, leaving James to take a very good 2nd. Sam Ellis finished 13th, Glen Hardy (53rd) and Martin Atkinson (96th). Simon Reid on his debut for the club completed the team of 6 finishing 108th, after stopping and losing both seconds and his lunch on the course. Nice one Simon!
