Some more good results for the club followed an interesting days racing at Wentworth Castle on Sunday. Once we had found each other in the fog, and managed to dodge the deer on the course, numbers were pinned on and our young and not quite so young athletes disappeared from the start, not to be seen again until the finish. Those of us who stayed until the end were treated to the views of the park when the fog briefly lifted. We would have been able to see pretty much all of the course and it was a beautiful setting.
However, lack of visibilty did not deter our ahletes, although in some cases a combination of fog and marshalling problems caused one or two of our athletes to run a little further than they had to. If you were in front, you couldn't see where to go next, and if you were following, you couldn't see the person in front to follow. For Alfie Manthorpe, this gave the opposition a bit of a chance as he added 100 metres to the course before getting back on track to finish in 1st place for the under 13 Boys, closely followed by Oliver Dane in 3rd and Joe Morton in 4th who had both taken the proper course. Morgan Bishell decided to get some extra mileage in too finishing 8th and bringing the team home in 1st position. Amelia Lancaster (U13 Girls) almost caught Hallamshire and managed an excellent 3rd place, with Mariella De Lara finishing 7th, Megan Storey 9th, Emily Simpson 11th to achieve second place for the team. Poppy Nolan and Sophie Kebell finshed well up the field in 18th and 19th place.
Kaya Walker (U11 Boys) finished in a strong 1st position on his debut for the club, with Nathan Ramsay and Sam Cottam finishing to bring the team home in 3rd position. Our U11 girls were led by Olivia Hogan who finished an excellent 4th in a very closely run race, with Francesca Shield not far behind in 9th. Megan, Mariana, Erin and Catherine helped each other round and secured 3rd place overall for the team.
Jonathan Shields had a great run taking a convincing 1st place for the U15 boys, with Matt Chaib improving his previous finishing position and finishing 6th and Dan bringing up the rear to bring the team home in 2nd place. Anina Atkinson (U15 Girls) finished a fine second, with Sophie Taylor in 5th and Georgia Hird making her club debut following a long period of injury finishing 9th, but bringing the team home in 2nd place just ahead of Rotherham Harriers.
Beth Ansell led the U17 ladies finishing in 2nd place, with Calvi Thompson taking 3rd. Susannah Curran finished in 9th place bringing the team up to 2nd place, despite the marshalls best attempts to send her the wrong direction. Susannah is a shining example of 'make sure that you have a good idea of where you are going' before you set off.
Helen Elleker was our sole Lady representative managing a fine 69th place overall, 4th in her age category. Sam Ellis, Mick Thompson, Glenn Hardy and Martin Atkinson made sure that the club had a larger representation than at the last race so we will have scored better - thank you gentlemen - there will be more of you at Spinkhill (I hope!)
