Club Details

The roots of the City of Sheffield Athletic Club goes back to 1894 with the formation of Sheffield United Harriers (red and white hoops) - a combined walking and cross country club.

This club enjoyed a rivalry with Hallamshire Harriers founded in 1896 mainly around cross country. Both clubs enjoyed significant success with Hallamshire dominating the northern scene in the 1920's and Sheffield United dominating in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Neither club was a significant force in athletics. In the early 1970's a breakaway club from Hallamshire with the support of Olympians John and Sheila Sherwood (400 m hurdles and long jump respectively) created Sheffield City Athletic Club. Shortly afterwards in 1975 this club amalgamated with Sheffield United Harriers to form Sheffield Athletic Club (yellow vests). This club rapidly established its position as the top senior athletics club in Yorkshire obtaining membership of the British Athletics League in 1976.

The club also dominated the South Yorkshire road and cross country scene with many medal winning Northern and Yorkshire performances. For example, Ken Newton got silver at the National Cross Country Championship over 9 M clocking 45.34 min. at Leicester in February 1980. Mick Thompson ran 1.04.15 h. at the Great North Run from Newcastle to South Shields in June 1986 which earned him a 14th position. Jane Shields ran 32.38 min. in March 1985 for a 10 K road race in Mobile in the US state Alabama.

In August 1998 Jonathan Brown broke Eamonn Martin's 10 year old British 10.000 M record by clocking 27.18.14 min. at Memorial van Damme in Brussels, Belgium. The British record is still in our Vancouver-based athlete's possession. The same year and month he ran 13.19.03 min. at DN Galan in Stockholm. Among Jonathan Brown's other merits are the gold medal at the EAA European Cross Country Championship in the deep mudd of Charleroi in Belgium in December 1996 over the 9.65 K distance. At the IAAF World Cross Country Championship in March 1999 at Belfast he finished an impressive 8th in the long distance (12 K). The London marathon 1 April 1999 earned him the club record of 2.09.44 h. and placed him 4th in the race. The Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 earned him a heroic 4th position at the marathon distance which was equalled at the following olympics in Athens 2004.

The club sought to compete at the highest standard and several members competed in the Olympic games. The vision of the club was always for a single strong unified club in the city. Unfortunately, attempts to amalgamate with Hallamshire Harriers in 1985, 1988, and 1994 were unsuccessful. The new millenium saw a new change with the rejoining of the walking club, still competing under the Sheffield United banner and Sheffield Athletic Club coming together to form City of Sheffield Athletic Club - still the top senior athletics club in Yorkshire. The club is promoting the successful Rother Valley 10 K at Rother Valley Country Park and Dam Flask Relay at Low Bradfield north west of Sheffield. City of Sheffield Athletic Club are now supporting a highly successful young athletics team.
