A SUPERB all round performance by the British League Team gave them first place in the second British League (Division 1) meeting at Carlisle on Saturday. Jamie Williamson broke the club record for the discus, which was set by Brad McStravick in 1982, with a throw of 49.16m. The win, with the added bonus of Trafford having a point deducted for fielding an ineligible athlete in the first round match, gives the team a two point gap at the top of the table giving them an excellent chance of a quick return to the premier division. Not surprisingly Sheffield took maximum points in the 400 metres. Beijing relay hopeful Richard Buck had little problem winning the A race in 47.19 and John Kelley was comfortably clear in the B race clocking 48.56. Kelley also took third in the B 200 (22.42) although the team were a little short in the 100m and 200m. Sam Ellis, running into form with a fast time in Milan recently, warmed up for the Olympic trials next weekend with an 800 metre victory in 1:51.02. Steve Evison was third for Sheffield in a slow run B race. There were some high scoring field events for the Sheffield team. The strong pole vault pairing of Luke Cutts (5.00) and Rhys Searles (4.60) took top points as did David Budd (14.79) and Graeme Matthews (14.43) in the triple jump. Jamie Williamson won the discus by nearly seven metres with a throw of 49.16 with Daniel Brunt runner up in the B event (41.75). These two, always big contributors to the Sheffield cause, scored well in the shot, Williamson finishing second with 15.79 and Brunt winning the B contest with 14.68. Another quality performance for Sheffield was the runner-up place by Lee Doran in the javelin with a fine throw of 64.98. Other notable Sheffield performances included: M Moubrey, 2nd, high jump, 1.95; W Mkandawaire, 1st B high jump, 1.90; L Peters, 2nd, B javelin, 55.96; J Ward, 3rd, 5000, 14:55.10; R Skedd, 3rd, 110 Hurdles, 15.18 Match score (top three): |
