Several of our athletes were in action in Exeter.

Competing in her last English Schools race walking championships before going to Birmingham University to study medicine Rebecca Mersh was never headed in the 5,000m track race. Her victory means that Rebecca achieved the rare feat of winning each one of the six English School’s titles open to her. Her first one was as a 13 year old in year eight.

A shin problem that has troubled her for the last two years has meant that virtually all her training and racing has been done suffering some level of pain and discomfort, as a result few of her times this year have approached the standard she produced in 2005 when she competed in the World Youth Championship in Marrakech.

Rebecca’s South Yorkshire Schools team mate Kathryn Granger turned the tables on the 2006 English Schools Intermediate champion Chelsea O’Rawe (Essex) as she eased away from her in the last 400m for a 12 second victory. Natalie Myers stayed with the two leaders for half of the 3,000m race before dropping back for a comfortable third place.

In the boys events Mark Pratt took 4th place in the senior boys 5,000m , whilst Tyler Bower and Eddie Brebner had a close battle for 7th and 8th places in the junior boys 3,000m
