Young Race Walkers Invited to Research Camp Print E-mail

Three young City of Sheffield AC race walkers took part in 4 day research camp at Leeds Met. University, an event that was partly sponsored by the University.

Great Britain junior international Rebecca Mersh and National Champions Kathryn Granger (U17) and Natalie Myers (U15) made extensive use of the facilities at the Carnegie Research Centre as they undertook treadmill sessions with high speed photography of 250 frames per minute to analyse the effects of fatigue on technique and sitting inside a confined BODPOD capsule to analyse body composition.

One to one screening sessions with a physiotherapist and a strength and conditioning coach highlighted areas of weakness for them to address and nutrition workshops gave them ‘food for thought’.

Their coach Brian Adams was kept busy attempting to attend all the activities that his four athletes were involved in (he also coaches Fiona McGorum U20 of Leicester WC). Now discussions and reflections will follow as the information is used to move forward with their winter training aimed at gaining selection for one of the two places in the European Race Walking Cup in May.
