Three of our young race walkers won medals at the English Schools AA Race Walking Championships at Derby on 17 September.
Rebecca Mersh won the Senior Girls 5km race in a time of 25min 57 secs, her fifth consecutive victory at these championships. Such a performance prompted praise from none other than Daley Thompson. "Rebecca did really well to win yet another gold, and now she needs to use this victory as a stepping stone to greater success further down the line."
Rebecca Mersh's feat overshadowed the excellent performances by her South Yorkshire Schools’ team mates Kathryn Granger and Natalie Myers as they both took 2nd places. Kathryn, despite having won the event for the last three years wasn't the favourite to take the U17 title but gave a good account of herself holding the eventual winner for almost half the race and getting within 14 seconds of her best time with 15.39.
In contrast Natalie was the favourite for the U15 title, but was 'gutted' when sickness forced her to momentarily stop on the first lap. Although she caught the leader she was not able to get ahead of her and finished in 16.24. The previous week she had walked 20 secs faster than the winning time in a local handicap event.
In the U17 boys 5,000m Mark Pratt won a close battle for bronze in 28.14 and a fourth place was picked up by Danya Sarayreh in her first year in the competition with 17.30 for 3,000m. |
